Resources
Hurricane & Storm Preparedness
Living on the Outer Banks means being ready for tropical storms and hurricanes. Here are the essentials every resident should know:
- Sign up for Dare County emergency alerts (opens in new tab)
- Keep a 72-hour emergency kit (water, food, medications, flashlight, batteries, first aid)
- Know your evacuation zone and route — Manteo residents typically evacuate via US-64 West
- Document your property with photos before storm season (June 1 – November 30)
- Secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and loose items before a storm arrives
- Trim trees and check drainage in advance of hurricane season
Flood Zone & Insurance
Roanoak Village is in a coastal flood-prone area. Flood insurance is strongly recommended for all residents. Check your specific flood zone designation using the FEMA Flood Map Service Center — zones determine insurance rates and building requirements.
Standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. Contact your insurance agent or visit floodsmart.gov (opens in new tab) to learn about the National Flood Insurance Program.
